Our Organization

The University of the Philippines Association of Biology Majors is a socio-academic organization established on June 8, 1975. UP ABM promotes its members' academic, social and moral development, and extends itself to the people outside the organization.  It unites Biology students into one solid group that embodies its ideals and aspirations. As an organization, it also links the past and present members of the organization.

Because in UP ABM, we don't just study life, we live it!

Our History

In the summer of 1975, fifty-four students enlisted in Botany 190, a course known as Field Botany, with Mr. Ramon Liwag as their laboratory instructor. The class had three out-of-town trips. The first trip was to Mt. Makiling, the second to Bolinao, Pangasinan, and the third one to Baguio City. Joe Ang, Arab Arambulo, Eric Chua Yap, Ruby de Leon, Tootsie Ignacio, Ammie Galoso, Chris Garcia, Marilyn Guevarra, Nina Frayna, Rene Oracion, Alice Piedad, Victor Vicente, and Yeng de Guia managed to group together for the field work, with Alice Piedad as group leader.

In the first trip, they reached Peak II which was 1,080 meters above sea level. In the second trip, they were able to overcome the inconveniences brought about by the lack of fresh water and toilet facilities. In the third trip, they visited Mt. Sto. Tomas, Mt. Data, and Borromeo Field in the PMA compound. The group stayed there for one night in order to consolidate their individual reports on each study area. It was during this overnight session that the idea of forming an organization was born.

The group, then called BTHS, started out as a casual and unsanctioned organization. It was formalized into the UP Association of Biology Majors on June 8, 1975. Eventually, it was duly recognized as a socio academic organization of the university on July 16, 1975.

Our Mission

UP ABM reaffirms its mission to be an instrument in the formation of service-oriented members who pursue academic excellence. It strives to orient and equip its members to respond actively to the needs of others. For this to be realized, UP ABM strives to promote Biology as a subject and as an institution relevant to our nation's future; instill the importance of education; be an instrument of social support; and develop cultural, environmental, political and national awareness.

Our Vision

UP ABM envisions the continual academic, social and moral growth of its members who shall serve as role models for others to emulate. It envisions an organization composed of: friends whose camaraderie reflects among members and extends to people outside the association; students who uphold good academic standards; citizens who are socially active and who are selfless devoted people; and human beings who have a firm sense of moral values.
